Max von Sydow in The Seventh Seal |
Max von Sydow
Born this day in 1929
Blofeld in Never Say Never Again
If there is one person who I would dearly love to meet and
chat with, it would be Max von Sydow. He’s had an incredible prolific acting
career that has spanned over six decades, showing adaptability and flexibility
that has ranged from live action to lending his distinctive voice to animation,
narration, and video games. The accolades are numerous and deserving – although
I would say they should be more.
Looking over his 150+ acting credits, there are so many
projects of von Sydow I have yet to see, but roles I have particularly enjoyed
include: The Seventh Seal (1957) as
Antonius Block, playing chess with Death; The Quiller Memorandum (1966) as Oktober, head of the secret neo-Nazi group
in Berlin; The Exorcist (1973) as
Father Lankester Merrin – a movie I still will not watch at night; Europa (1991) as the narrator – seriously watch just the
opening sequence and listen to von Sydow’s hypnotic voice; Solomon
Kane (2009) as Josiah Kane; and The
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011) as Esbern.
And, of course, he is charming, for a villain, in Never Say Never
Again (1983) in which he plays Blofeld.
He is still very a very active actor and you’ll be able to
see him in The Letters as Celeste van
Exem and is the story of Mother Teresa. And he’ll appear in Star
Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens later
this year.
Check here for a prior post about von Sydow as Blofeld.
Kitty cuteness alert.
