It’s a long, fun weekend being at Wondercon in Anaheim, but
boy am I tired. I attended quite a few panels over the three-day event and am
still getting my write-ups for Bleeding Cool. Anyway, here is today’s Bond 365!
Peter Fanene Maivia
Born this day in 1937
Stunt Fight Choreographer and Car Driver in You Only Live
Twice
As I researching Peter Fanene Maivia, I happened across a
tidbit of information: Maivia, who played a villainous car driver in You
Only Live Twice, is the maternal
grandfather of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. Maivia was born in Samoa and became a
professional wrestler in the US and Asia. His nickname was “High Chief” because
he was a Samoan High Chief; the distinctive tribal tattoos on his legs and
abdomen a visual affirmation of that fact. Doing well competitively during the
1960s and 1970s, Maivia was favorite among fans in the WWE (originally known as
WWWF).
He eventually retired from wrestling and became a promoter
of the sport via the NWA in Hawaii in 1980. However, he was diagnosed with
cancer in 1981 and passed away in 1982. Maivia had only two acting credits (one
was post-humorous) and a credit for stunts work in You Only Live Twice.
