I have attended this conference for a number of years and I feel that while it is a smaller conference, it fosters a supportive environment for those new to presenting but is also a great opportunity for vetting out ideas. The organizers schedule many events for conference attendees including film screenings and a special Saturday event. Last year, it was a tour of Breaking Bad locations around Albuquerque.

Hello All! I hope everyone is having a fantastic summer! I’ve been on a little hiatus, drafting a number of upcoming blog posts and preparing for an upcoming conference. And speaking of conferences, yes, it is that time of year again in which I'm putting out the call for abstracts for the upcoming annual conference held in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The conference will be held February 19 - 22, 2014. I've been attending since 2008 when I was a graduate student and honestly, it's a very good opportunity for students and independent scholars to come share one's scholarship with like minded individuals. Deadline Extended for Abstracts for Anthology

I’ve received several quality abstracts for the Call for Papers I advertised, however I would to expand the pool of abstracts for the following areas (with some examples):

I have been diligently seeking out venues for getting the word out about my call for papers and I would like to thank Dr. Kannenberg, Jr. of Comics Research & Such and Mr. Zielinski, Mr. Baack, and Mr. Bill Koenig of Her Majesty’s Secret Servant for posting my CFP and/or giving me a shout out in their blog. I sincerely appreciate the support and if I have missed anyone, please let me know so I can give you a thank you in my next post.

to the James Bond Phenomenon

Since introducing himself to the world at the exclusive gambling club in London over fifty years ago in Dr. No, Bond, James Bond has become one the longest running film series in the history of cinema. The franchise has been very successful with 24 Eon Production films spanning six decades and 14 Ian Fleming books published several times over since their original debut at the height of the Cold War. It is not surprising then that the Bond influence on society has been a long and fruitful one in all media forms.

While there has been much written about the Fleming books and Eon Productions films since Bond’s literary and filmic inception, it is the goal of this anthology to explore other aspects of the Bond phenomenon. Hence, the editor is seeking entertaining, intelligent essays that explore and analyze the global cultural response to James Bond. All media forms are of interest: starting from the 1960s through to the present times. Please do not submit essays focusing on the Fleming books or Eon Productions films.

Gearing Up for Annual Conference

It was time to dust off the call for proposal from last year's conference call and update with the new deadline dates and website links for the upcoming SWTX PCA/ACA 34th annual conference, scheduled for next February 13 - 16th in Tamale-wood, or in other words, Albuquerque, New Mexico. I've been attending the conference since 2009 and am serving my second year as area chair. It will be my fifth year presenting a paper, once I decide on my topic of course. Trying not to be biased, but this is one of the best conferences around and worth the time of any graduate or upper-undergraduate student who wants to present to an eager group of individuals from all walks of popular culture interests. It provides many networking opportunities, and while growing each year, still maintains a friendly and helpful conference. The SWTX PCA/ACA James Bond and Popular Culture Area Chair invites papers for the annual conference on ANY aspect of James Bond films, literature, comics, video games, and culture. Here are some topics to consider, but is by no means an exhaustive list:

• Explore criticism of recent Bond movies being more like Bourne movies
• Analyzing Bond’s motives in the history of Bond films – have they changed?
• Is there room for a 21^st Century Bond?
• Villains as metaphors for nationalistic/political sentiments
• Raymond Benson or John Gardner as Bond Novelist
• How does James Bond novel Devil May Care by Sebastian Faulks stand up as a direct sequel to Man with the Golden Gun by Ian Fleming?
• Is Never Say Never part of Bond canon?
• Literary Bond vs. Filmic Bond
• Comparison of Bond portrayals in the films
• Picking Bond – History of Bond Candidates
• Ian Fleming as Storyteller and post-Fleming novels
• Switching Genders: The Character M
• Bond Women/Sexism in Bond Films/Women’s Studies perspective
• James Bond Jr. Cartoon/Comics
• Eurospy and Asian inspired movies
• Videogame adaptations
• Continuity challenges of a 50+ year old franchise (all mediums)

ANY IDEA OR TOPIC relating to Bond will be considered. 

Please note the following presentation details:

• Presentation time consideration: 15 – 20 min maximum
• There are no honorariums for presenters; this is an academic conference. There are however, a number of conference award opportunities. See the conference website for more information.
• Please send a 250 word abstract and the presentation title by December 1, 2011 via the online submission link at: http://conference2012.swtxpca.org
• Participant conference registration deadline is December 31, 2011.
